Portsmouth Green Party To Hold Citizen's Income Meeting

14 November 2014

Public meeting on the Citizen's Income, the Green Party's alternative to the benefits system

Portsmouth Green Party is hosting a public meeting to discuss the Citizen's Income, an alternative to the existing benefits system which is considered by some to be far less complex and which encourages those working in the informal economy to join the formal economy.  The current system of tax and benefits, complex and means-tested, can be seen as discouraging those working less than full-time on low earnings from working longer hours.  A universal system also avoids the stigma attached to benefits.

Ian McCulloch, Green Party Coordinator for Portsmouth, said “One of the advantages of this approach is that it removes the so-called “benefits trap” whereby some people can find they lose money when transferring from benefits to paid work.”

The meeting will be at Fratton Community Centre, Room 4 on Tuesday 18th November at 7:30pm, and the speaker will be Miriam Kennett, founder and director of the Green Economics Institute.
