South East Hampshire Green Party Selects Candidates for General Election

The South East Hampshire Green Party has announced its General Election candidates for 2015. The Party will be standing in 75% of the Parliamentary seats across the country, and this is reflected locally, with candidates in Fareham, Portsmouth North and Portsmouth South. The surge in the Party's membership, an 85% increase in the past year, has been especially noticeable in Southsea.

Ian McCulloch is the candidate in Portsmouth South, Gavin Ellis in Portsmouth North, and Miles Grindey in Fareham. Mr McCulloch said “People feel let down by politicians, and yet there has been an explosion in political activism. People want to do things differently and aren’t afraid to be bold and challenging. Instead of austerity, we should be investing in a low-carbon economy, creating real jobs for the future. Where we've lost good quality engineering jobs in the dockyard, we should invest in building a fairer, low carbon economy which doesn’t rely on the financial sector or on scraping the bottom of the fossil fuel barrel.”

Gavin Ellis is a Chartered Certified Accountant and resident of Cosham. His vision of the future for Portsmouth is for the city to have a diverse economy, where the minimum wage is replaced by a living wage. Not only does he want to get the party’s message and policies across to the electorate, he also seeking to start a debate, interest and conversation about society and politics in both the UK and the world, amongst the electorate, as he believes there is still too high a degree of voter apathy at present. Gavin believes the 2015 general election will provide a golden opportunity to show that the Green Party is a true alternative to the current Westminster elite for the constituents of Portsmouth North.

Miles Grindey is 19, and the Chair of the Warsash Residents' Association. He is a student at Itchen Sixth Form College, and has consistently opposed the Welborne development, also being the Chair of the Western Wards People's Voice and petitioning Hampshire County Council and bus companies to reinstate the socially necessary bus service to Fareham Community Hospital and to increase the flow of buses to Whiteley.
